Scotland police investigating death threat against JK Rowling after Rushdie stabbing

Police in Scotland said on Sunday that they are investigating a threat made against author J.K. Rowling after she condemned the stabbing of Salman Rushdie on Twitter.

The author of the Harry Potter book series tweeted on Friday that she was "Feeling very sick right now," in response to the news of the stabbing attack against Rushdie, a fellow author. "Let him be ok," she continued. Rowling later shared a screenshot of a threatening tweet she received in response that read, "Don't worry you are next."

"We have received a report of an online threat being made and officers are carrying out enquiries," a spokeswoman for Scotland's police said on Sunday, according to Reuters.

Rowling reached out to the social media company asking for support after the menacing tweet.

"Twitter Support any change of some support?" Rowling tweeted, tagging the platform's support team along with screenshots of the interaction.

Rowling added on Friday that "police are involved (were already involved on other threats)."

Rushdie, 75, was stabbed on Friday by a man who rushed the stage as he was preparing to deliver a lecture on artistic freedom in western New York. Rushdie has lived under threat since his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses prompted Iran's Ayatollah Rohullah Khomenei to issue a fatwa against him, urging Muslims to kill him.

Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey is accused of attacking Rushdie and has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault.

Rushdie remains in critical condition, suffering stab wounds in the neck and chest, but he has been taken off a ventilator and is able to speak a few words, according to his agent.
