The two candidates that received the most votes in the first round of the Slovenian presidential election, which was held this Sunday, were the conservative Anze Logar and the independent Natasa Pirc Musar, according to official results that are still preliminary.

According to official data, Logar, a candidate for the Slovenian Democratic Party, received 35% of the vote, or 11% of the total votes cast. He hopes to be the first conservative president of the nation since independence. According to the Bloomberg news agency, Logar is an ally of former Nationalist Prime Minister Janez Jansa.

On the other hand, Pirc Musar has received 26% of the vote. She is a lawyer who has the backing of recent organizations including the Young European Greens Party and the Pirate Party.

With 16 percent of the vote, Milan Brlez, a member of the ruling Freedom Movement party and a former speaker of the Parliament, came in third place.

Election day’s second round is planned on November 13. According to Slovenian legislation, the role of the president is primarily ceremonial, despite the fact that he serves as the head of the armed forces, appoints judges to the Constitutional Court, and directs the Bank of Slovenia.

The progressive Prime Minister Robert Golob, who has been working to undo all the reforms put in place with Jansa since a left-wing coalition installed him in office in April, may find it challenging if Logar ultimately wins.
