Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Oct. 17-22.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and, starting Sept. 30, in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Wil Brennan, Los Gatos football: In the game of the year in the PAL/SCVAL De Anza Division, the senior caught three passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns as Los Gatos beat previously undefeated Wilcox 28-7 to take sole possession of first place. Brennan scored on TD receptions of 74 and 73 yards.

John Chung, Sacred Heart Prep football: In a 26-7 victory over Aragon that kept Sacred Heart Prep undefeated in PAL/SCVAL Bay Division play, the senior defensive back had 17 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Chung is a Harvard commit.

Noah Cole, Amador Valley water polo: Helped the Dons go 2-2 at the Villa Park tournament, scoring 10 goals, handing out 10 assists and making six steals. Including 12-11 league losses to California and Monte Vista, the senior finished the week with 15 goals, 15 assists and nine steals. Amador Valley is 11-11 on the season.

Emmanuel Karnley, Las Lomas football: The senior had two interceptions and scored a touchdown on a fly sweep to help lead Las Lomas to a 38-21 victory over Miramonte in a Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division game. The defensive back has 10 college offers, including seven from Power-5 schools, according to 247sports.com. Las Lomas is 4-4, 2-1.

Chris Lawson, Foothill football: Caught three touchdown passes, including the final two of the game, as Foothill rallied to edge Dublin 28-22 in overtime to remain undefeated in the East Bay Athletic League’s Valley Division. The sophomore finished with 10 receptions for 117 yards. Foothill improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in league play.

RL Miller, Sacred Heart Cathedral football: The Arizona State commit caught a touchdown pass, returned an interception 47 yards for another score and had a 22-yard fumble return for a TD as Sacred Heart Cathedral defeated Bellarmine 30-17 in a West Catholic Athletic League game.

Grant Morgenfeld, Palo Alto cross country: The junior finished first in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League No. 3 race, covering the 5,000 meters at Baylands Park in 15:28.4. He ran 15 seconds faster than the runner-up.

Justin Pretre, Menlo School cross country: Won the gold at a West Bay Athletic League race, finishing in 15:20.2, the second-fastest all-time mark at the 3.1-mile Baylands Park course. As a team, Menlo finished in a course-record time of 80:46.4, eclipsing the previous mark of 80:54 that Bellarmine set in 2018.

Omar Staples, Oakland Tech football: In a 38-20 victory over Castlemont in Oakland Athletic League play, the senior edge rusher who just announced that he has an offer from Stanford had five sacks and caught a touchdown pass as a tight end. Oakland Tech is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAL.

Shane Timmons, Saratoga football: Threw for 509 yards and five touchdowns, completing 29 of 45 attempts, as Saratoga lost to Fremont-Sunnyvale 42-36 in a PAL/SCVAL Lake Division game. The 6-foot-2 junior also ran for 62 yards in seven carries.
