Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter shared the reasons why the duo broke up

On February 22, 2021, the French duo made up of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo , Daft Punk , announced their separation after a 28-year career, four studio albums and even an animated film.

Daft Punk was characterized not only by its house music, but also by its humanoid robot costumes. The clothing of these robots became part of popular culture, and an interesting fact in this regard is that the Mexican José Fernández was in charge of designing the iconic outfit that the duo used in their 2014 Grammy presentation , the night in which they also , they took four statuettes.

Without a doubt, the music industry suffered a huge loss with the breakup of Daft Punk, especially because it happened so abruptly and without any explanation... Until today.

Thomas Bangalter, who could be recognized within the duo as the tallest robot with visor-shaped eyes, gave an interview with the BBC , where he finally shared the reasons behind the separation of Daft Punk.

The first challenge that Bangalter found after so many years under the helmet was precisely to continue this narrative of being a couple of cold and emotionless machines, where it was of the utmost importance to never show their faces or speak to the press. Little by little, Bangalter missed being a human.

“Daft Punk was a project that blurred the line between fact and fiction with these robot characters. It was a very important point for me and Guy-Man(uel) not to ruin the narrative while it was happening. This project was an exploration that started with the machines and ended up moving away from them. I love technology as a tool, but I am terrified of the nature of the relationship between machines and us .”

Bangalter also assured that, contrary to what might be believed by the concept that developed around Daft Punk, the songwriting process was "very human". With this deeply rooted idea, the musician made it clear that he does not plan to put his helmet back on for a long time, especially in the sociocultural context in which people live where artificial intelligence seems to threaten life as it is known.

“Now that the story is over, I found it interesting to reveal part of the creative process that relies heavily on humans and not algorithms of any kind. We tried to use these machines to express something extremely moving that no machine can really feel, but humans can."

“We have always been on the side of humanity and not of technology. And as much as I love this character, the last thing I would want to be, in the world we live in this 2023, he is a robot .”

Although Daft Punk said goodbye more than two years ago, the music is far from over. Thomas Bangalter started in 2022 with the Roulette project , a record label with which Bangalter will not only present unpublished music, but will seek to support new talents within the underground scene in electronic music.

Regarding Guy Manuel, he is preparing a concept album called REVISION which will have the participation of several of his colleagues. Homem-Christo has defined this project as a continuation of Random Access Memories , Daft Punk's last album that arrived in May 2013.

It is worth mentioning that to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this historic album, a collector's edition will arrive this May 12 that will feature alternative takes and songs that did not make it to the final cut of the album. As a first preview, the piece Fragments of Time , in collaboration with Todd Edwards, was shared on streaming platforms .
