Elections in Corrientes: Peronism fractured and paved the way for Gustavo Valdés to consolidate his hegemony

Justicialism will have two electoral fronts in the elections for partial renewal of the provincial Legislature. The governor, meanwhile, consolidated his space ECO + Vamos Corrientes and everything suggests that he will strengthen his position in the territory

Yesterday, Tuesday , the deadline for the registration of the electoral fronts that will compete on June 11 in the renewal of the Legislature and deliberative councils of 64 Corrientes municipalities that adhered to the provincial electoral process expired.

There will be three fronts that will compete to keep the provincial legislative positions in dispute: 15 deputies and 5 senators . The main one is ECO (Encuentro por Corrientes) + Vamos Corrientes, the alliance that hegemonizes radicalism with Governor Gustavo Valdés as the main figure. In front will be the divided justicialismo : on the one hand the Frente de Todos (FdT) and on the other Ganemos Corrientes.

The province has a complex voting system . The electoral fronts do not unify the ballot, but each party that integrates it presents its own ballot with the candidacies of the space. At the time of scrutiny, they act as collectors for the alliance they make up. For this reason, on voting Sunday, close to a million people from Corrientes will find themselves in the dark room with almost 60 ballots : 32 will be from ECO + Vamos Corrientes, 22 from FdT and 5 from Ganemos Corrientes.

The ruling party will renew 10 seats in Deputies and three in the Senate , while the opposition will dispute 5 and two, respectively. There are also some 145 places to renew in the local deliberative councils.

The names that will embody the candidacies will be known on April 22 when the deadline for registration with the Corrientes Electoral Justice expires. However, there are certain clues that it could happen: former governor Ricardo Colombi will surely seek to repeat as senator. The same will happen with his bench pair Sergio "Checho" Flinta and the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Pedro "Perucho" Cassani. They all wear white berets.

In the pro-government bunker there is tranquility. They aspire from a minimum to keeping two thirds in the Legislature and, from a maximum, to further increase parliamentary representation. This will have national and local political consequences. Valdés is shaping up to be a leader with regional weight in national radicalism and, on the other hand, the path would be clear for the election of executive positions in 2025 .

An open internal

The Corrientes Justicialista Party has been intervened for years. In charge of the process is the Buenos Aires mayor of Hurlingham, Juan Horacio "Juanchi" Zabaleta . After the meager result of 2021 —Valdéz was re-elected with 77% of the votes—, he had to overcome internal questions in this instance to put together a front that can compete against the ruling party.

"The closing of alliances was the result of work that involved a lot of dialogue and continuing to think about proposing an alternative that would improve the lives of the people of Corrientes," Zabaleta explained to Infobae .

Then, he announced that the candidacies that the Frente de Todos will present "will be representative of the unity and breadth that was achieved on this front."

"We are confident that we will achieve good results because the Front expresses the need of many sectors of Corrientes society to overcome a stage where many Corrientes have suffered for years," he added.

There was a sector that was opened from this assembly. It is under the baton of Parlasur deputy Alejandro Karlen , a leader in direct dialogue with President Alberto Fernández who tried in any case to divert Zabaleta from the intervention.

Karlen put together “Ganemos Corrientes”. He tried to add former lieutenant governor Gustavo Canteros to the space , but the former teacher union leader preferred to remain within the Frente de Todos, which he joined after leaving ECO.

“Peronism needs to come out of resignation. They want to force us to accept what they impose on us and that is not the Peronism for which I militated all my life," said the Mercosur parliamentarian in dialogue with this medium.

“Peronists not only have ideas but we have faith. We have confidence in our movement and in being able to overcome the worst crises. I know what and how to do it and I have the courage to do it”, Karlen concluded .
