Car theft wave: New York to sue Kia and Hyundai over lack of anti-theft technology

According to the city hall, the city is facing a wave of robberies related to the two brands, after a challenge launched on TikTok went viral.

New York - The mayor of New York , Eric Adams , announced on Friday, the 7th, that the city will file a lawsuit against Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai for not having anti-theft technology, which led to the increase in thefts of these cars in the United States .

According to a press release from the mayor, the process aims to "hold both companies accountable for refusing to equip certain models of their cars with anti-theft instruments".

Mayor Adams noted that because stolen cars don't have enough anti-theft devices, the city faced an 890% increase in Kia thefts at the end of last year and a 766% increase in Hyundai thefts in previous months.

"We are not going to stand by while automakers turn a blind eye to security and make it easy for criminals to take advantage of New Yorkers," he said.

For his part, the city's legal director, Hinds Radix, emphasized that the public safety crisis in the city is increasing due to the "irresponsible business practices" of automakers.

He pointed out that those who commit these robberies often use their cars for other crimes. "This is a huge concern for us, and we are taking steps to end it," he said.

In a statement sent to the NBC television network, Hyundai said it is "committed to ensuring the quality and integrity of our products". According to the automaker, engine immobilizers have been standard on all vehicles since November 2021, and a free software update has been made available to prevent this type of theft.

The company also said it will refund any customer who has already purchased a steering wheel lock, and that it "continues to provide free steering wheel locks nationwide." Kia did not respond to the TV report's request. / EFE
