Japanese rescuers find parts of missing military helicopter

Tokyo (AFP) - Japanese rescue teams have found parts of a military helicopter a day after it disappeared from radar with 10 people on board, the coast guard said on Friday.

Two pilots, two mechanics and six crew members were aboard the UH-60JA aircraft when it disappeared shortly before 4:00 pm (0700 GMT) on Thursday near Miyako Island in the southern prefecture of Okinawa.

Coast Guardsmen found various remnants of what appeared to be the helicopter including a door, a broken rotor blade and a yellow life raft still folded inside a bag.

Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada vowed on Friday to continue the search to find the 10 missing people.

There are still no indications of the causes of the event, which occurred while the device was participating in a reconnaissance mission in the area.
