Tomorrow Finland will become the 31st member of NATO - Stoltenberg

Finland officially joins NATO on Tuesday, April 4, becoming the 31st member of the Alliance.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this during a press conference broadcast by Yle.

According to him, it will be "an outstanding day" for the security of Finland, the Nordic countries and for NATO as a whole.

“This is a historic week. Tomorrow we will welcome Finland as the 31st member of NATO, making it more secure and our Alliance stronger. We will raise the Finnish flag for the first time at NATO Headquarters,” he said.

Finland, along with Sweden, simultaneously filed bids to join NATO last May amid Russia's all-out war against Ukraine. On the night of March 31, Turkey became the last country to ratify Finland's entry into the Alliance. A few days earlier, the Hungarian parliament did this.

At the same time, the prospects for approval of Sweden's accession, which is still waiting for the consent of the two countries, remain uncertain. Speaking on April 3, Stoltenberg said that in any case, Finland's entry into NATO would provide more security for Stockholm as well.
