Ukraine and Poland seek to resolve grain tension

Ukraine will stop exporting grains and oilseeds to Poland, given the destabilization of the Polish market caused by the massive arrival of grains from its neighbor, the Agriculture ministries of both countries reported this Friday (04.07.2023). The agreement excludes the export of these products to third countries via Poland.

Ukraine was forced to seek alternative outlets for its agricultural products due to the blockade of its Black Sea ports since the start of the Russian invasion. But due to logistical problems, the product piled up in silos in Poland and other countries, causing a collapse in prices, as well as protests that on Wednesday led to the resignation of the Polish agriculture minister.

"The Ukrainian side will refrain, until next season, from exporting [to Poland] wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds," said the new minister, Robert Telus ( main photo) .

His Ukrainian counterpart, Mycola Solsky, announced that the two countries will develop mechanisms next week to "limit exports that can only be carried out with prior agreement from the Polish side."

On March 31, five Central European countries - Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria - urged the European Commission to agree additional aid to farmers in the countries most affected by imports from Ukraine. (AFP)
